Not Dying

The edge of the cliff is growing soft with moss,

As sit down to rest, just a moment,

and that moment grow roots.

Death is kinder than any lover I have known.

I have cheated, stopped searching for her cornflower eyes.

She’s still the most beautiful widow I have ever

Kissed.

Oh but how my arms grew heavy

from holding so much goodbye.

The medicine a blurred stranger-

maybe a fool, wearing my face.

It licks the suger from my lungs,

And somehow my chest stops tickling

Its stealing

the slow, quiet erosion of a hunger

that once felt like the only true love in me.

What is wrong with me?

My love doesn’t swoon me-

Like she used to.

I just sit in the dim,

watching the light I used to hate

flicker like a liar I almost believe.
