NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE

I have crossed seas in search of better soil.

Where rivers never run spoilt with oil,

and I need not beg lanterns for light with oil.

My tongue no longer contorts

like my mother's did.

To stand here,

I must divorce my father's ways -

In thought and deed.

The soil here fails to find home in me.

Like the sand knows not my name.

Sand tossed with shards,

at times, cutting my bare feet.

But is this not the Nigerian dream?

To stand on soil across the sea.

I stand on the soil which moulded my skin.

My feet now feel stranger here

Yet, in many ways,

still home.

Like the sand remembers my name.

Is this not the Nigerian nightmare?

To stand as stranger on home soil.
