Natures Wrath

Original Submission by Sarojini Moodley

Natures Wrath

In a thunderous bolt

Bolt of turbulent force

Attacking and Destroying

Destroying everything

In its wake

Like a great white

White shark swallowing its prey

In a split second

Without warning,

That dreaded day

August 26 2026

Rock and glacier disembarked

Disembarked from Langtang Lirung Peak

The catastrophic

Catastrophic ice-and-rock avalanche fell

Fell into the Lhende Khola River

Causing a seismic

Seismic energy

Equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake

Like a bull stampeding

Stampeding in a thunderous

Thunderous vibration

In a sharp and calculated

Relentless cruelty,

The silent river

Becomes a trapped serpent

Bursting from its skin

When touched by melted ice

Ice and debris

As a huge Blackened wave

It pours its wrath

Like a volcanic eruption

Spitting fires of aggression

To destroy all life

Life in its wake,

Perforated fear

Engulfing the victims

Clutching, clutching

Branches and debris

To hold on

To a thread of hope

Hope of survival

Petrifying screams

Echoing in the dark

Dark skies

Like the universe is weeping

Weeping in a rumbling

Rumbling thunder

Thunder of silence,

Some ran up slopes

Some buried under debris and tunnels

Some were floating

Floating motionless

Motionless in the Blackened Waters

And

In the midst of this chaos

Thousands of victims are missing,

The silence after the roar

Bleeds memories to smithereens

Profound sense of loss

An angry reality

Penetrating the windows

Windows of their soul,

Rescuers became heroes

Saving lives in conditions unfathomable

Digging through tunnels

Tunnels and debris

Hearing faint voices

Pleading to be rescued

Astonishment beyond measure

In a breathtaking state

State of euphoria

Rescuers pulled out victims alive

Alive after ten days

Ten days of the catastrophe

A miracle beyond imagination

A mind-boggling wonder,

Mothers looking for missing children

Children looking for parents

A horrendous task

That affects the innermost

Innermost human psyche,

The stark reality

Reality Survivors faced

Is the task of identifying

Identifying family’s bodies

In numb progression

Skin breaking out

Out in clammy sweat

Knees buckling in panic

They conducted the task

Task of identification

In a daze of petrified

Petrified recognition,

Thousands of victims are still missing

Pilgrims, foreigners, tourists and locals

A heartbreaking catastrophe

Without warning

Flattened an entire village

Into a mirage

Mirage of mud and debris

Nature unfolded

Unfolded its wrath

What a disaster.
