My Non- Dominant Hand
By Barsha Priyadarshini
My right hand rises unconsciously, dominating the other
Everytime I get involved to get something done.
I never think why I choose it and leave the other.
My alarm clock thinks the same.
It keeps ringing on the left side table of my bed,
Until my right hand switches it off.
My right hand picks up my toothbrush everyday
Takes the breakfast in
Holds the comb while tying a braid
Then fixes the hair pins.
I never asked it to do so, but I always wonder
Can my other hand do the same?
If ever my left hand tried to dominate
I would prefer to throw stones into a lake, I sit infront
Hoping to go farther next time, but it won't.
Pick a knife to chop onions but end up with a cut on the right thumb.
Grab the knob to pull a door even though it says "PUSH"
Hold a pen and think that writing a sentence from the right side of a page seems easier
But scribble a paragraph of worse handwriting than I usually write
Apologise everytime I greet as my left hand would be up for a handshake.
I would prefer to do everything, My right hand used to
Even if I strain my hand to halt my efforts
I would still prefer it everytime
When your right hand approaches a handshake
My left hand rises unconsciously, dominating the other
No apologies this time but,
A chance to hold your hand and keep walking together.
