My Name in the Mirror

I learned my name before I learned to be ashamed,

My mother’s hands made sure I knew where I came from.

I see her in my eyes when I say it out loud,

For I am black.

I grew up dodging questions I didn’t ask to be,

“Where you really from?” like home ain’t enough for me.

But home is in my laugh, my food, my family tree,

For I am black.

I’ve failed, I’ve risen, I’ve loved, I’ve had to fight,

I’ve learned to hold my joy like it’s my birthright.

Nobody writes my ending but me tonight,

For I am black.

I carry stories in my skin, old and new,

Of lands I’ve never touched but still ring true.

Every step I take is proof of what they went through,

For I am black.

And when I dream, I dream in colors bold and wide,

Not small enough to fit the boxes they decide.

My future’s mine, and I won’t let it hide,

For I am black.
