My Life Lessons

She thought ‘twas a world so bright
That everyone was unique and equal in their own right,
Honored their words like an oath-sworn knight
But forgot that shadows creep in with the light.
A regular Pollyanna was she,
Wearing rose-tinted glasses to see
An illusion that never existed,
Hiding a reality so twisted.
She had her heart set,
For a place in the space sect
Wanted to set foot on Mars,
And land among the stars.
She never accounted for the people with the masks,
With hate in their hearts,
And snide words filled with vitriol,
Pushing you down instead of making you stand tall.
She never fit in, she thought,
It was all her fault, for the hate she got.
She hushed the voice in her head,
Her spirit was all but dead.
Trying to be inconspicuous,
She vowed never to be called ‘ridiculous’,
She lost herself trying to fit in a mold,
Became scrap instead of gold.
Some people wanted the best for her, though,
Their words were harsh, they rang true.
Some were sweet but deceitful
When placing her trust, she had to be careful.
She thought hard and came up with a strategy.
She couldn’t keep hiding when she wanted to soar,
Stand tall and be proud.
She would put on her armour and face the crowd.
Engage with people when they have knowledge to share
Keep them close when they show respect and care.
Stay calm and never respond to taunts,
Ignore sneers and empty vaunts.
Draw a line that should never be crossed,
If it’s breached, pick a sword and fend off at any cost
Never accept less than your worth,
Push back the shadows and light the hearth,
With fires of strength, fierceness and mirth.
