My conspicuous invisibility

My conspicuous invisibility has always gotten me into trouble, despite what they said: “Be quiet and no one will notice you. No one will bother you”.

Instead, my silence screamed to my perpetrators, “hurt me”.

Every attempt I made to stay under the radar only made me more visible

Ridiculed for my every move, physically assaulted for my silence, mentally and psychologically manipulated.

I was seen in my silence but invisible in my pain.

I would cry in public, and it would go unnoticed; I would ask for help, and it would be brushed off. “Fight back, be strong”, they told me.

My strength was in silence and kindness; unfortunately, no matter how much I was hurt, I never resorted to the same forms of infliction as my abusers.

In fact, I would treat them kindly even after they had hurt me.

I would wave and smile; I even went as far as asking why they did what they did.

It never solved the issue.

But I sometimes think my five-to ten-year-old self was so pure, I could not even comprehend why someone would hurt me, and my first response was to help my abusers rather than ridicule them.

I wish I had been treated with the same kindness.

I truly did not deserve the pain of being conspicuously invisible.
