Mouthwash

When I took it, swished and spat it,

I still longed to rather swallow,

but I've learned to kick the habit.

Now we sit in stinking burrow.

In whiskey spit I taste your laugh.

Hope you'll greet me come the 'morrow.

The sun could not outpace their wrath.

Before we marched on God's behest,

they came as lightning on our path.

I know each wound is just a test.

I'll soon have whiskey to imbibe

and toast that we'll together rest.

Yet when it started to run dry

and our losses outdrank the pay,

we heard it's costly not to die.

I write to you now as I lay

still with hope they'll curb the bloodloss

before I'm dry by end of day.

Use my whiskey as a mouthwash

to put famine on your palate

and keep my ashes from the cross.
