Mist and Milestone

I stood where the salt spray kissed the air,

A silver crest within my hair,

The lighthouse rose, a silent twin,

To the steady light I held within.

I watched the fog begin to creep,

While secrets of the ancient deep

Whistled songs of those before-

Faces traced upon the shore.

The tide below was white and loud,

A restless, churning, foamy cloud,

But I was anchored, draped in black,

With sixty years behind my back,

Shimmering pearls against my skin,

Cool, like the peace gathered within,

And though the mist obscured the view,

I felt the pull of something new.

I do not fear the hazy line

Where sea and sky and soul entwine;

I'll be the beacon, firm and tall,

Through every rise and every fall.

And as the twilight turns to grey,

I let the currents drift away,

Content to stand, to breathe, to be-

The woman I was meant to be.
