Mind Song
By Sharika Nair
Thinking about thoughts; Those words that flow in the head, The quiet, boisterous stream, Flowing, gurgling through each waking minute.
Pleasant thoughts invoking sweet memories, Gentle musings about a book read, a movie watched, Angry rumblings about a bitter disagreement, Sad notes of inharmonious regret;
No dam built to deter these waves. What can one do but pick each one, Like pebbles on the shore of a great river, Feel each one and throw the ones with jagged edges far away, To sink into the rippling waters, only to float ashore another day; And slip the smooth, cool ones into the pocket, To take out often and hold and feel, without bruising fingers, To examine in a pleasant, moment of leisure, On and on, with the millions of pebbles. On and on, with the millions of thoughts.
