Midday Hike

Birds dotting the sky,

Like the ash from a nearby fire,

Splotches of green,

Amidst the palette of earth.

A breeze, rare to find,

The heat, beating against the outcrop,

Thorny twigs of trees,

Threatening to snap like patience.

The tough rock persists,

Rising up to the soles of feet,

The flat blue sky,

Sinking like lead onto the horizon.

And the haze gets louder,

Amidst the orchestra of insects,

Thorny twigs of trees,

Threatening to snap like patience.
