Memoirs Of A Prisoner
By Sahana Rebecca Vijay
I reside in the darkness of the night
The sky black as a raven's feather
Where the diamonds of the heavens reunite
Just me and my thoughts, alone together.
I run my fingers along a barren oak tree
Engraved is a love story, ardent and bold
The names whisper they're happy and free
But the wood bears witness to secrets untold.
In the distance lies a silver wrinkled lake
O’er which ash laden clouds shed their tears
And in consolation for many a mistake
The rain gently hushes me, and drives away my fears.
I reside in the dark shadows of my cell
With luminous cracks in the roof above
In this inky damp cube do I now dwell
And look back upon my life, now deprived of love.
I run my fingers along the rugged stone wall
To find legends of my precursors in this jail
Inscribed with blood, they speak of a brawl
Where many would die and only one prevail.
In the corner lies a murky little puddle
O’er which the broken ceiling spills the rain
To drum a constant rhythm, ever so subtle
That entertains my life, now so plain.
