About the Work

"Love me." is a poignant piece that captures the raw emotion of unrequited love and betrayal. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt narrative, Morrow depicts the journey from affection to realization, highlighting the dissonance between physical desire and emotional connection. The poem's structure mirrors its theme, emphasizing the superficiality of seeing only the surface and ignoring the deeper essence.

Love me.

Original Submission by McKenzie-Ann Morrow

Love me.

By day, I was coming to terms with the fact that you never loved me.

By night, I was processing the pain of having been betrayed.

We were kissing in a brightly lit garden, and I said:

“I love you”

And you replied

“I can make love to you”

Upon hearing your response, I began to cry.

The realisation had set in.

The person I loved only wanted me for their own pleasure.

The love I thought was pure and genuine was a cover-up to get me undressed.

A cover-up to reduce me to flesh.

Much like the shape of this poem, you only saw my body.

Ignoring the deeper meaning of the words painted on my soul.
