Love As A Grain Of Sand

Sand - Silicon dioxide

Miniscule quartz crystals that clink together

But millions of colours, textures and tastes

Did you know someday we could leave our footprints on wet sand

Pick up shells of long-dead creatures, make them tell us their ancient secrets?

And I'll let you chase laughter through my nimble strides

As we write our names together, you and I.

Did you know someday we could sit on the coast of Croatia?

Apparently the largest musical instrument in the world

And I'll let the notes sung by the never-ending waves

Whisper to you about everything I've ever felt and loved.

Did you know there's a beach lined by rainbow glass pebbles?

From long-forgotten sailors’ bottles of rum

Someday we could pick them up, one by one, like memories

And fill our pockets with sparkling treasure.

Did you know that sand in the desert has a mind of its own?

Powdery fine, like silk or satin- flowing through your hands

And the cold moonlight bathing the dunes silver

Would make you throw your arms on my waist and pull me closer

Did you know there is sand that's black-obsidian like the night?

Magnetic, like your eyes, how they latch on to mine

Birthed from the rage of volcanoes long past

And we'd build castles and turrets and towers and moats.

Did you know that someday we could match shots for shots

And turning the sand down in an hourglass

In a long abandoned party game, that is, by everyone but us

Because we could not bear to lose to each other

Just as much as we could not bear to lose each other.

And did you know that Destiny writes her (our) stories

Letter by agonising letter on the Sands of Time

And I'll let you hold my hand as we trudge along

With the winds billowing our cloaks behind us...
