Poem 4 for Hashtag Kalakar

Lessons from a Tree

When I first met you two months ago

You stood - a tangle of crooked branches

Like lines drawn haphazardly

Tall, reaching to the sky, almost

I noticed the leaves only when were tiny buds

Shooting out of the branches

Signalling new life and a new season

And then you looked happier, healthier

Your new leaves, small and slow

Peered out, almost shy, at the rich forest around

But soon claiming space backed by your roots

A bright red, then a beautiful powder pink

Then the freshest, lushest green

Now many of you have grown to full size fresh leaves

Some red-pink ones follow you

To make a full tree

Sunbirds flit by your branches

Bulbuls love to rest a while on you

You mirrored my heart

In its beginnings for a new season

Resilience, transience, you are a silent teacher

Of these great truths of life

You are part of the forest

Yet you have a right to be here

It’s been great making friends with you

I will carry your lessons in my heart always

And when times turn lean and mean

I’ll remember - seasons change
