Leaves Without My Name

The leaves I thought were already mine,
Written by another, spoken through me,
Passed by, as if in haste,
Their shadows skidding over stone like birds fleeing a shot. I turned back to see where they went.
Something gentle came to remind me,
A message.
The leaves I thought were already mine,
Blew to an unfamiliar land,
Our tradition continued without us.
An old reflex woke up, jealousy; its army grew.
Like another scar where one already stood,
I thought it had carried a copyright,
Like my name that I thought was mine alone.
A message.
The leaves I thought were already mine,
Left something I couldn’t ignore,
Reading it made me shiver,
The words rang like metal striking metal.
My hands played the piano; my legs ran,
Kept myself away from it -
The message.
The leaves I thought were already mine,
Handed over while I was still reaching,
A quote clung to my mind that he once told -
“You don’t lose what was never only yours.”
