Leaves and I

Like leaves that crumple to the ground,

withered—

yet roots, unbound,

reach into damp earth

fingers aching

for fleeting touch.

So love can decay—

shrivel into corpses

that remind us

of what was

before.

And when it does,

we reach for the past.

The fallen leaves

will return one day—

lush and bright

as they once were.

But not the same.

The roots forgive the leaves

for leaving.

For changing.

Burrowing,

beneath fallen leaves,

for what will never return

the same.

The leaves crackle beneath me.

The roots and I

must learn

to let go.
