In Isolation

It's been four days since we last saw him. He always kept to himself, would only speak when spoken to, and the only time you could get a glance at him was when he went outside to smoke a cigarette, or in the kitchen grabbing something to nibble on. The first and only actual conversation I ever had with him came on the first day of the national lockdown enforced by the president. He was engaging; it felt weird to hear his voice. I couldn't quite match it with his face. I guess when someone is as closed a book as he is — was, you find yourself subconsciously giving them an identity, a name, a voice. And then comes the moment of truth when your imagination is shattered by a deep, calm voice, with an energy you could have never thought possible. He seemed and sounded human, normal, like the next twenty-something-year old guy.

We’re now on day eight of the national lockdown enforced by President Cupcake. Covid-19. four days since the last time I saw him. I know it's been exactly four days because he passed through the kitchen and greeted me. He had a lighter in one hand, a pack of cigarettes and his keys in the other. I asked how day four was. He grinned and said something I couldn't quite make out, then he unlocked the kitchen door and went outside, to smoke I assumed.

Today I woke up at midday. The work-from-home fever surely didn't last long ‘cause I could not be bothered to wake up early and keep up the home-office facade. My flesh and bones piled on the bed like a dead animal. An hour passed and I finally jumped at the promise of an ice cold beer waiting for me in the fridge.

There was a smell. It could only be death. And it was.

Now the police are asking all sorts of questions. Did he say anything to anyone? How did he look the last time we saw him? There was no note.

But he's been in there for four days and none of us noticed. What could we possibly know?
