Hope Returns Each Evening

I read once,

That hope is the thing with feathers.

Is it a bird?

With sharp talons and a long beak?

“Wings” seems to be a beautiful characteristic,

Angelic limbs I suppose.

But I have known hope for a long time,

(As it’s settled in my room for a decade or two).

It is a cruel and messy roommate.

Littering empty promises everywhere

In my bed.

Under my pillow.

Scattered like dust on the windowsill.

In between pages of my favourite books.

And though I gather these promises and stuff it in a bag and leave it in the hallway,

Hope returns each evening.

With mirth and warmth.

And a large cup of tea.

“Yes, tomorrow will be better,” it says to me, “tomorrow will be better.”
