Homecoming
By Yashika Taneja
I stand behind the glass
And look down, look out
At the clean serpent roads
Sheltered beneath the trees
And the colourful houses stand
Draped in blowing sands
The orange turning brown
The yellow turning faded cream
There is a film of dust
On the cars of people’s dreams
The stillness of the desert city
Is broken when a lone car cuts through
I witness the breaking while
Sipping on my tea brew
Towards the other side of this road
Lies the main vein
Where cars are speeding past
To reach their destinations fast
I look at their march
Trying to spot a silver giant
Amid the parade of their roars
Not even momentarily bored
While my eyes jump from left to right
Red, white, black colours bright
I look and wait
And I start humming
Making my music in silence of room
On the glass my fingers drumming
And then it comes to the road
My silver giant gleaming
When I see my darling come home
My face starts beaming
I forget all about the road
The cars, the trees, the birds, the dust
My husband’s come home to me
To welcome him I run must
Suddenly the big world fades away
And my small world comes alive
When he enters with a smile
And lovingly hugs his wife
The evening begins to sparkle
The night becomes so young
Who remembers the scorching heat of the day’s sun?
A thought enters in midst of all
Tomorrow again against the wall
Behind the window I shall lean
To look at the still serpent black and clean!!
