Hit List

Martha had an AK-47.

She bought it on the dark web.

It came without instructions

So she had to do a Google search.

She had no intended target. Yet.

But there were numerous possibilities-

Jimmy in Accounts, for instance, who

couldn’t resist a remark about women

over forty letting themselves go.

Or Janet, two doors down, with the lip fillers,

the Louis Vuitton handbags and the holiday

in Majorca twice a year.

Or the guy in the corner shop- (she didn’t know his name)

with the dirty fingernails and a grunt whenever

she asked for a Lotto Quick Pick.

Or him in the Credit Union who refused

her a loan for the double-glazing.

Oh God, how to choose ?

She made a list.

There were six definites and five question marks.

“In any event’’ she said, “I don’t have to decide

anything for the moment.

I’ll keep it in the attic

and see how it goes.”

Martha was right.

It’s good to have an AK-47.

You never know when you might need it.
