Hidden In Plain Sight: The Story Behind The Night
By Rithika Lyer
I sat on the ledge of my window sill
And looked to the lonely night ever so still
I quietly pulled out my quill to write until
My worry and jitters spill
As I pen down the thoughts that cloud my mind
Tears begin to roll and unwind
For, I have been confined in a world so blind
Please, save me from this plight
And help me fight the forlorn night
Oh! How my heartaches
To kiss goodbye forever my mistakes
I still recall the day my heart pulled its break
Rewarding my trust with a dull lingering ache
I gave him my body, my soul
My everything as a whole
Oh! You silly girl. How foolish of you to let him take control
And ensnare your faithful soul
I nurtured, I cared
I loved him, I declared.
I ran towards him, unprepared
To finally face the grief that we shared.
The sounds of nature blared across the town
But the night wore a rather morose frown.
The sky stood still, bearing the voices of woe
It heard and soaked, not so long ago
The midnight breeze gently brushed my skin
As my body soaked every feeling within.
I put on a brave face in an attempt to brace,
The misery of vile disgrace
I brought upon myself in a rather earnest pace
I did not blame him. I did not hate him
I did not fight him. I did not hurt him.
I yearned for him for, I loved him to my heart's brim
I looked to the sky so dim
Warding away the spirits of the night ever so grim.
Wishing upon stars so many
I voiced my heart and cast a penny
But, our memories of joy and delight have transformed into stones of spite
They mirror my plight
In the gloom that surrounds the night
I loved, I failed
But what of the memories that entailed
Tears veiled my face and grief trailed my grace
But, I shall not accept life's vengeful embrace.
I will resist this sorrow with time until tomorrow
When the early rays of dawn peek through the night
I will strive to revive my lost fight
In a desperate attempt to see off my plight
I gather all the might and latch on rather tight
But what of me now,
I shall not fret I vow
I closed my mind with this thought
But my heart remained distraught
But I cannot let my heart get caught
In pity and remorse, it never sought
I quietly put my quill away
And said enough for the day
Keep your sorrows at bay
For the night after today.
I closed my eyes to pray
And fell into the arms of the night so grey
As I gently lay in life's crooked play
