Heretic’s Prayer

Carina Wessels

My body is a temple of bruises.

My heart — a vacant tomb.

A holy place for the faithless.

A stained-glass window, without a room.

My altar is a shadow of fire and smoke,

and my sacred wine tastes of blood.

I have had my own sacrificial slumber,

and my own revelational flood.

Once upon a time,

my body was a temple of innocence,

of hope that I had had more worth.

Now that my temple hosts a revenant,

I shall find vengeful solace in my rebirth.
