Harmonious Silence

By Hrishit Pandey

“Did you hear it?” asked Samay, in a voice even fainter than the hum….‘You are even fainter this time…?’Then followed the answer, as if repeating it twice in an identical hum, but this time louder and much clearer… Yes, but that was the problem….‘Hmmmm….. Hmmm.. Hmmm..Hmmmmm…’ was the tune that flew past them.. Right through them. As if piercing its way… Caressing the skin to arouse them while doing so… It seemed as a lullaby, but as unmusical as it could have been… In it there was nothing that would scare them or please them, but something that just froze them to the very limit..It was followed by a silence which was unbearable, which was demanding to be broken but remained the way as it was, because that’s how it was meant to be…Samay, his eyes closed… Trying to divert his mind thinking about something pleasant, not about what he was thinking earlier…He began to think about the memories he had with his brother, before he left him… The small things they did to enjoy their very moment… With all those childhood memories, resonating in his mind, he dissolved in the very music of the silence… Samay, opening his eyes, saw his younger brother Karan, lying beside him… But to the contrary he seemed excited… To Samay it was all dark, beside his brother he could see nothing… Samay now nothing more than the very silence, kept looking at his brother…. His brother seemed awake, but he knew that he was asleep deep inside…

Breaking the silence, Samay speaks,“So Karan, now it’s time to acknowledge this silence…It’s time for you to part from me…”

Karan, full of sweat, felt unpleasant.. Waking up, he held his hand to where his brother was… Rather used to be… There he felt nothing, which exactly was what his brother has become…
