Happiness
By Sudhalekshmi M
Happiness came unadorned
that day
that I could
barely recognize her;
She was dressed up
in a plain, white
sleeveless frock
in place of the
rainbow colored
pinafore one.
As rude as I am,
I asked her
what she was doing
in the midst
of a mundane day,
she neglected me
and went to the washroom straight,
smiled all the way,
poked on my nose,
called me beautiful
and went straight
into the kitchen.
Perplexed, I followed her
and watched her sip
the less sweet coffee
Without complaints.
I was sure that
she would leave
after the breakfast,
But there she was,
slow dancing
through my living room,
that too,
to my off key tune.
In the afternoon,
which she called
the most”dreamy part”
of a day,
she wandered through
the garden with her bare feet,
painted flowers in the pages of old notebooks,
read the old, torn copy
of ‘Eleanor and Park’ again,
sipped black coffee,
ate ‘little hearts’,
watched a black and white movie
and finally,
left me in the night
after kissing me on forehead.
Watching her walk
out into the night,
I neither wondercam
when she would be back
nor about the grief
that might follow
as usual,
but instead
about how
she came
out of the blue
and how I could
barely recognise her
that day.
Most of all,
about how
happiness had
never ever looked
thiis phenomenal
to me before!
