GRANDMA'S FIRESIDE STORY

The fire crackled gently, and the stars twinkled brilliantly in the sky. The grandchildren pulled closer to Grandma, wrapping their gowns tightly around their waists. Dogs barked in the distance, and Chloe, their cat, purred softly. “Grandma,” one little voice asked, “why do animals make so many sounds?”

Grandma smiled.

“Ah,” she said, “because animals know something very important, Jude.” Seth looked at grandma with interest. “Really grandma, like what?”

“The dog barks when danger is near,” Grandma said, stoking the fire absently. “The birds fly up and call out before the storm comes. The cows moo to find their babies. Animals speak the way they know best so their friends can hear and be safe.” The children nodded.

“To help,” Grandma whispered, “you must speak in a way others understand.” God saw the danger. Grandma’s voice grew soft. God saw that people were in danger, too. Not from a storm or a wild animal, but from lies, sadness, and a sneaky enemy who wanted to pull hearts away from love.” Jude screamed with delight. “I know who grandma. It is the sly old fox.”

The fire popped. “God loved His children too much to stay far away, so Jesus came close. So God did something very special,” Grandma said. “He came close. He came small. He came as a baby named Jesus.”

The children leaned in. “Jesus walked where we walk. He felt hungry and tired. He laughed. He cried. He spoke with kindness.” Speaking our language. “Jesus didn’t shout from the sky,” Grandma said. “He spoke our human language— with stories, hugs, healing hands, and love.”

He said, ‘Follow Me.’ ‘Do not be afraid.’ ‘I love you.’ “So we could understand. So we could choose the right way. So we could be saved.” Love Wins. “The enemy tried everything to stop Him, but His love was more powerful.” “Jesus beat the darkness. He rose again. And His love still speaks today.” The fire burned low.

Grandma stretched her arms out and warmed her wrinkled hands, placing her palms on both her grandson’s cheeks. Seth instantly leaned into her palms, closing his eyes. Jude giggled and placed his small hands over hers.

Grandma wrapped her arms around the children. “Just like animals warn their friends,” she said, “Jesus came to warn us and save us because love always speaks in a way the heart can hear.” The children smiled. They felt warm. They felt safe.

And above them, the luminous moon and stars listened too, holding the night perfectly still.
