Gogo's Manuscript

I was sitting in church, and the bishop started giving his sermon.

Sitting next to me is a gogo dressed in a green fleece dress, with bright copper lipstick and a wholesome smile.

Out of her tan handbag came a palm-sized Old Mutual notebook and a blue pen.

She opened it to the next blank page and started taking notes from the sermon.

Occasionally, she would nod or murmur in agreement with the bishop's statements.

Upon watching her write, I realised how beautiful this scene was, and I wanted to take a picture.

But then I realised I'd be simplifying a moment so profound into a single image of her hands.

So, I decided descriptive writing would do her and myself a greater justice.

Her hard-worked hands, wrinkled but wise, wrote in that tiny book for the entire 35 minutes.

Her gold rings complemented the tone of her skin. They caught the light just right at times, and glistened the way the sunlight dances on water.

Her hands were the bigger attraction to me. They seemed to carry a weight of a lifetime, portraying her life's work, beliefs, and struggle, while at the same time carrying a serene beauty about them.

I feel as though this does her spirit more justice than a picture ever would.
