Full Circle

“Life comes full circle”

I have heard people say.

But for me,

it took me well into my mid-twenties to finally understand

what those words meant.

The people we look up to,

the people we turn to

for every little thing.

The people we believe

that no matter what happens,

“I have my people to go to.”

And then, one day,

you notice the change.

They begin looking up to you.

They ask you

about the little things.

They seek your opinion.

They wait for your approval.

They talk to me now,

about things they never did before

And you smile.

Your face says

“Yes. Why not ? “

But your heart aches,

because it was not

how it once was.

When the roles swapped,

a wave of pain washed over me.

It is strange,

growing older

while watching the people

who raised you

grow older too.

You begin to notice

the little things

you once never saw.

The slower steps.

The repeated questions.

The moments when they need you

for things they once did for you.

And perhaps this

is what life means when it says

full circle.
