From Young Eyes

By Janae Smyth

Growing up was tough

With your guidance a lot less rough

You’re always my biggest supporter

Makes sense why I was always shorter

I can see you’ve gone through so much

But you’ve always stayed as steady as a hardwood truss

We were kids and you kept us as such

Saving us from heavy emotion

Guided us through with unshakable devotion

I know the angles wept for your loss

For all the names etched in a cross

But inside the pearly gates there’s rejoices

For when they heard the new voices

Pain I didn’t truly understand

Still you never failed to lend a hand

Yet whenever you spoke

Through every fear or hope

Tucked away was always a joke

Frequent thoughts of I told you so

But you kept it on the down low

Sat back and watched the show

Guaranteed to be humble

Ever so gentle when we would fumble

Like father like daughter as the saying goes

sometimes I’m sure I was your foe

But never the less you’d ensure I grow

You met the perfect partner in crime

Rocky at the start of its timeline

Grew a family that could really shine

You were always persistent

Ever so consistent

After a while we grew less resistant

And now I’m insistent

More than happy to call her a mum

Which may be strange to some

Your photos and our memories I will always cherish

I hope you never perish

The life you’ve built is so lavish

The light you’ve given us will never tarnish

Taught to chase our goals, let them ravish

Taught to protect our dreams to others may seem a bit stand-offish

Let us learn from our blunder

It’s no wonder why we won’t fall under

Taught me how to use time well spent

And how to accept a shoulder lent

So thank you for all the lows and highs

For this is how I see you from young eyes
