Evanescence
By Madhumita Ghosh
The party is over.
Grief comes at night, and afternoon too,
My heart sinks at the shores,
Hurriedly, I try to walk past.
But he’s stronger, he engulfs me;
I try, try and wrestle and cry;
Only a void of shallow laughs echoes the room.
Is there someone on the other side of the mirror?
She’s looking at me all fine;
She points at her bruises,
Only I can see them, same as mine.
As we light the last cigarette,
We see the morning light together.
Blurry vision, trembling fingers,
We know that dawn is far from us.
Dried cheeks keep count of agony,
And agony keeps us alive;
For the greatest fear is not knowing what’s beyond-
It is the walking silhouette of aching despair,
And fear of going still and ever so numb.
The party is over.
The promises are scattered in ashes,
The story will not be written-
It will befriend oblivion,
And we shall become strangers to despair, again,
Close the door, bid goodbye.
