EVA’S LITTLE WINGS

When Eva was only three years old,

She was left at an orphanage door.

Too young to know what happened,

Too little to understand why,

Or what she was left there for.

Now Eva was five, and she sat in her chair,

Watching the sunlight shine everywhere.

Her little legs could not run,

But her bright eyes searched for the sun,

And dreamed of playing carefree.

Every morning, the children would go to a playground where grasses grow,

They would chase the ball and shout and play.

While Eva sat in her chair and watched and wished she could join them.

Sometimes she would whisper, “I wish I could run and play in the warm sun,

And I wish I could race with the children today.”

“I wish I could feel the grass under my feet as I play,

And laugh without thinking that I cannot run.”

But the children would come and bring her delight,

And they played passing ball to make her feel right.

And for a little while, she would almost forget.

Someday, she sat in her chair,

watching them play, unable to join them.

But their laughter made her loneliness fade away.

The workers would help Eva every day,

Lead her gently on her way,

And make sure she was cared for in every way.

They would brush her hair and make sure she ate,

And sit by her when she was feeling afraid.

They filled her heart with joy and love and play,

And stayed beside her through each day,

Making sure she never felt completely alone.

But every time a child would find a home,

Eva would smile from the deep inside of her.

She was happy for them that they found their way,

And glad that they found a loving family to stay,

But she secretly wondered if they would come for her.

She would sit by the window and watch the cars go by,

Her little heart secretly asking the sky,

“Is there a family out there that wants me too?

Will someone come and take me home someday?

Or will I always be left here alone?”

But every day that went by made Eva feel more alone,

Though she tried to keep her little hopes alive.

Eva had one beautiful place where sadness could never erase

Her love of drawing birds with wings so wide,

And little animals running side by side.

She drew them flying freely across the sky,

As if they could carry her dreams up high.

She drew little rabbits, birds, and bears,

Giving them freedom she wished she could share,

And watched her little drawings come alive.

Then one afternoon, a couple came,

And suddenly everything changed.

They wandered through the orphanage from room to room,

Until they found Eva sitting alone,

Drawing a bird beneath a sky-blue frame.

The woman smiled and knelt beside her,

And the man looked at her picture with pleasure.

Eva looked up with her curious eyes,

Not knowing that behind those gentle smiles

They had already begun to choose her.

They looked at the picture of the birds in flight,

And saw a little girl filled with courage and light.

They did not see the wheelchair first;

They saw her dreams, her spirit, and her worth,

And the beautiful heart shining bright.

A few days later, Eva heard her name,

And nothing in her life would ever be the same.

They told her she had found a family,

A home where she was loved and wanted to stay,

And tears of joy fell from her eyes.

She could not run or walk that day,

But her loneliness had disappeared away.

For she had arms to hold her tight,

And a home to return to every night,

And someone to say, “You are here to stay.”

That night, Eva looked up at the sky,

And watched the little birds go by.

She smiled as she whispered, “Maybe I have wings too.”

For dreams can come true when love finds you,

Even when your feet cannot touch the sky.
