Ek kyk na my vriend, die bobejaan

wat weemoedig wag vir die maan.

Soos die donker nader, nader –

swyggebed tot Onse Vader –

vir die vreesgreep wat om my vou

soos die swartnag se klou.

Nou waar ek dig, digby die dier,

wonder ek oor sy menslike gier;

die siel wat in sy binneste smag,

die weerkaatsing van mens in sy gedrag,

want sy melankoniese klag

eggo in my moeisame lag

teen die kranse van die Waterberg –

Ek weet wat sy bulderblaf verberg.

Die bôgom in my brein wat my wakker hou –

elke nag dieselfde roep van rou.

So seker soos die skemer daal

sal die dood vir my en hom kom haal.

Ek vrees dis al wat ‘n einde sal bring

aan die droefheid wat my volg van die begin.
