Ego

So long I have chased

A mere figment of desire.

Believing myself incomplete,

I grasped at every jagged piece,

But not a single one would fit.

Looking back, I have to wonder:

Was this hunger ever ours?

Or was it simply something

We were taught to believe?

A myth spun by others,

Of what we need to be fulfilled.

Now that it is just you and I,

Is there anyone truly worthy

To capture our heart

And soul?

What could they possibly give

That we cannot offer ourselves?

We are already enough,

Just as we have always been.

They could never match

The weight of what we give.

So we will no longer seek

That which we do not need.

Let them come.

Let them prove their worth,

If they wish to claim the gem

We have buried deep within.
