DUST BUNNIES

The vacuum is impish against the wall after rummaging through the house. It pushes more than cleans. Pushes through tiles, spreads water along the bathroom, feeds the blooming grout. Taps against heels, plucking at the smells of outside like an anxious dog greeting its neighbour. Lifts rug corners as if it can find more and will actually do the job it’s supposed to do. But it all pushes out. Out-skirting to one corner of the living room. Beyond the cracked TV and half-attempted puzzle on the floor. All the way to a gap between the raised bookshelf and a section of the wall that juts out, out, out again because the architect forgot an eraser that day. Situated in the alcove, a bushel of rabbits grows on every crumb, splinter, hair;

as wheat, as grass, as grain; filling their opaque misshapen bodies.
