Down life's road

Original Submission by Manuri De Silva

Down life’s road.

He walks along the lonely road,

The harsh brown dirt helps not his load.

The burning sun beat down on his back

He feels his skin being burnt to a black.

The wind whips his face blowing hair to and fro

His eyes squint, they can tear no more.

But they feel not the pain in his soul

His plight, to them, is a road unknown.

He looks time to time

At the closed doors, the high iron gates,

The boarded shut windows.

He calls a little, his voice small and hoarse

But he cannot keep his head held high for long.

His feet burn on the parched ground below

He feels thirst creeping up his bone dry throat

An unwelcome feeling rumbles inside him

He curses his hunger that intrudes without inviting.

He looks once again hope brimming his face

At the stone cold walls that hold for him no solace

They hear him not, the ones within

Blind as they are to the sun and the wind

And yet he walks on, as he knows he must

Till he can walk no more, for the sweat or the dusk.

All the while hoping, praying a little song

He will not have to find sleep, hungry once more.
