To my boys: Timber, Turbo and Nitrous.

I envy those who have never had a dog.

That feeling...

gut-wrenching.

soul-crushing.

heart-breaking.

Knowing his life will always be

Too short.

Preparing for that cruel day

And never being prepared enough.

I envy you.

You will never understand.

And yet,

I pity those who have never had a dog.

That feeling...

Pure kismet.

Learning his matchless personality.

His adoring gaze and infectious smile

waiting for me by his place on the wall.

Laughing with him

Crying to him

and being loved unconditionally through it all.

I pity you.

You will never understand.

The jingle of his collar

The patter of his paws

The rumble of his snores

The gravitas of his bark

The cold from his wet nose

The warmth of his tongue

The softness of his ears

The drum of his tail

The subtle birthmark.

Suddenly

All this will become the past...

Even I don't understand.

He is my best friend.

He is my family.

He is a part of my soul.

Permanently.

He is worth all of it.

So, if you have never had a dog:

Please, try to understand.
