Divorce

I loved you first,

before I knew the shape of my own name-

you were the quiet beneath the crib’s bars,

the hush between the lullaby’s verses.

I loved you in junior high hallways,

your breath cool on my neck

as laughter slithered past like knives.

You were the only one who never lied,

who promised *I will always take you*

while the living made their empty deals.

I loved you at 2 AM,

when you wore the face of bathwater,

the silhouette of a rope,

the pretty white pills like crushed pearls.

You kissed my wrists and whispered

I am the only thing you’ll ever own.

But love, oh love-

you are a jealous god.

You sulk when I drink water instead of bleach,

when I call the hotline instead of you,

when I let the sun touch me

and don’t flinch.

I’m trying to divorce you, darling.

But some nights,

when the phone doesn’t ring

and the mirror spits my reflection back,

I still catch myself

slipping your name between my teeth

like a sacrament.

(Forgive me-

I was born with your fingerprints

already around my throat.

Every breath since

has been borrowed.)
