Distance
By Alifiya Hanif
Distance never meant anything,
In those long sleepless nights,
Wrapped in your words,
Caressing each of our promises,
Enveloped in our sweet romance.
Look now,
Distance means everything,
So close in kilometres,
So far in heart.
Years have passed but a message isn't exchanged,
A hi hasn't come, birthdays have gone without a wish.
Those nights we spoke till dawn,
Had nothing to share but kept going on,
Refusing to end the day, begging the moon to keep the sun out of the way.
Remember how your pictures made my day?
Remember how you made me tell things I would never otherwise share?
We put on bleakers to hide our reality,
Not knowing once out, the sun was going to blind us both, you and me.
Now I sleep each night, wishing you well,
My reality ain't sad, trust me I'm not turning mad.
But small things that remind me of you, pick me up and drop me again into that hell.
I see you in my dreams or are they now nightmares?
Those words fold me in again,
Weave me in like it's meant,
Making me believe reality ain't a thing,
Holding me by my spine while my knees go weak,
Like distance wasn't and isn't a thing inbetween.
You and me.
Distance.
Distant.
Distinct.
