Differentiation

A lifelong pursuit to a realm of knowledge, a mind’s sacred blend,

a custodian of intellect, an absolute truth, a dignity to the brain.

But when the numbers gather, my nerves grow still.

Applied or pure, their purpose I cannot distill.

I cannot tell the price, yet pride swells when I make you cry.

No wonder I do not like it, especially when I need to differentiate,

a concept hard to embrace. Manipulating functions, a complex chase.

I speak the language of derivatives, its verse;

I can rehearse the rules with words, perverse.

Literary minds may find no offense in sight,

and mathematicians, too, hopefully take no slight.

But can musicians differentiate a hundred-dollar note?

A sharp question, with notes that rise and thrill,

sometimes flat, sometimes natural, sometimes still.

At the end of the day, we manipulate language and thought,

using our means, a battle of terms fought.

In a world feigning lyricism, a mirage we create,

to mask our insecurities and alleviate self-debate.

Deep within, it is solace we truly seek, to feel less weak.

A ruse to make ourselves feel better, a fragile technique.

Differentiation, a divisive act we disdain,

language and cages, ages and sages, our uniqueness in pain.

Yet it breeds escapism amid tormented pages.

I made a final, forlorn attempt to shift the gaze

against hypocritical professionals and thinkers' ways.

We may lack the key to calculation’s gate,

or the melody to sing a function’s fate,

but in the world of rhetoric, we all possess a role,

hiding faults, walking life’s path, unheard, unwhole.

Trapped by society’s limited expectations,

examinations and veiled jubilations,

mindlessly ensnared in the web of conformity,

yearning for liberation, for true authenticity.

We shied away at our faults, from all walks of life,

going unnoticed to follow the strife,

believing in what we know, what we idealize.

And we live to an extent of dysfunction.

We all want to be heard, felt, and recognized,

with no exception. We are intellects, both mighty and flawed,

celestial beings and demons maraud.

My existence: to uplift others, fostering connection and appreciation.

We intertwine, empathy and compassion, the goals that align.

Yes, a stunt to make me feel better about myself,

but maybe also others, the humankind, maybe.
