hierdie gedig is vir elke meisie wat dag na dag leef met pyn waarvoor sy nooit gevra het nie, vir elke stille seer wat agter ’n glimlag wegkruip, en vir elke hart wat steeds probeer aanhou klop al het die wêreld dit probeer breek.

die stilte wat my versmoor - jv

my lyf is nie meer myne nie,

dit voel soos 'n ding op 'n rak in 'n donker vertrek,

iets wat iemand neem wanneer hulle lus is,

en teruggooi wanneer hulle klaar is.

ek het geleer hoe om stil te wees,

hoe om my asem weg te steek,

want elke keer as ek probeer praat,

raak my stem kleiner,

tot ek self begin glo

dat ek niks werd is nie.

ek onthou die oë wat my deurboor,

die gewig van hande wat nie vra nie,

en die koue waarheid

dat ek net ’n voorwerp was,

’n liggaam, nie ’n mens nie.

daardie herinnering sit vas

in my bene, in my ribbes,

in elke spiertrekking wat ek nie kan beheer nie,

soos roes wat stadig deur yster vreet

tot daar net brose breuke oorbly.

ek vertrou nie meer mense nie.

elke glimlag voel soos 'n mes

met n blink lem wat net wag

vir die regte omblik om te sny.

ek hou terug, ek trek terug,

ek word kleiner en stiller,

want as niemand my kan sien nie,

kan niemand my weer breek nie.

my hart het ’n huis van stof en skadu’s geword,

waar donker drome

dag na dag

deur die gange dwaal.

maar in die nag,

wanneer ek alleen is,

kom die skadu's terug.

hulle fluister hoe vuil ek is,

hoe min ek beteken,

hoe ek net 'n dop is wat iemand opgemaak het

en leeg agtergelaat het.

en ek glo dit

meer as wat ek wil.

daar is 'n vrees wat saam met my slaap,

'n vrees dat ek weer so sal voel,

dat iemand weer sal vat wat oor is,

en ek sal nie sterk genoeg wees

om nee te sê nie.

en so bou ek mure,

klip op klip,

totdat selfs die wat my liefhet

my nie meer kan bereik nie.

party dae wens ek

ek kon my vel afstroop soos ’n winterjas

en wegstap uit hierdie liggaam

soos iemand wat ’n brandende huis verlaat.

maar pyn is ’n hardkoppige huisgenoot,

hy pak nie sommer sy tasse nie.

ek sit vas in hierdie lyf,

in hierdie geheue,

in hierdie stilte wat my stadig versmoor.

en soms wonder ek

of daar ooit iemand sal wees

wat sag genoeg kan liefhê

om deur al hierdie mure te kom

sonder om nog stukke van my saam te vat.
