Despair

Despair is the thing with gills

That swims boxed in the soul,

And eats up any bird that falls,

And keeps hunting mercilessly,

And most dangerous in darkness unseen; And sickening must be the night That keeps the fish alive

That killed so many alone.

I’ve seen it in the deepest ocean, And the longest rivers;

Always sniffing and looking,

For a bite of me.
