Delusions of death

Once I sat, under the moonlight, gently singing;

That is, until I heard the distant knell ringing.

I turned around with a smile and curtsied,

For standing before me, was the angel of the deceased.

“Oh, young minstrel,” quoth he,

“Won’t thee sing for me?”

And so, I sang a song of beauty,

As flowers near him lost their vitality.

“Dost thou know me?” he asked,

His voice full of mirth and curiosity.

“Why of course,” I replied, steadfast;

“For thou are the God of rest and serenity.”

“Then pray tell,” said the Lord of Mortality;

“If thee regards me as such with thy eyes,

Why dost thou have’em closed at face of fatality,

And speak to thyself such lies?”
