December's Child

By Sidhi Gupta

Lower the flags to a half mast, peace has come—

And a stalemate arrives on the horizon over the sun,

When you blink do you see the strobe lights?

Bruised at your knees from fighting yourself to sleep

My wonderwall, why do you paint yourself red?

You’re a sign of freedom yet you’re as caged picture frame

I wish I could gaze inside the spirals of you for a moment, maybe,

A carpet to the feet of those who need a minute of ecstasy.

A self destructing star, hot to the touch, but I’d kiss your blisters better

Everyone wants a glance at you, evening star,

Must have been cursed with your beauty, that you don’t see

Hid your face in your hands when you saw your reflection in the rain

Intertwining myself in the thoughts of you leaving me cold and alone

In some sickly sense we’ve ran our miles, I couldn’t keep up with you

Snuck into bathrooms and giggled as we’d hide

Ran your fingers through my hair, and for a moment we were just loose arms

You mystify me, I’ve been following you around Daedalus's labyrinth,Thought I saw through the façade, but I don’t think I do anymore

I’ve hit a dead end.

Loved the emotion and the imagery — so powerful and mature.
