Deathbed

The heavens rumble,

With a thunder and a storm.

As I underneath it- crumble,

And the glass jug

On the bedside table-shakes.

The night grows colder- and yet colder,

As I weep tears.

On my own deathbed.

This must have shaken the pride of the skies,

For it does all but show its face.

Its pride must have broken- or strengthened

For it thundered, and rumbled, and grumbled- yet,

Yielded dry tears-

On my frayed, pitiful deathbed.

I think now, that all the tears I cried-

Were for none-

But me.

For now, I want, of all the treasures-

To have someone to dry these tears-

Off my face-

And wet it yet again-with their own,

And to sit near me; ruffle my scaly hair

On my lonely deathbed.

As I weep for my own self,

My drying, dying, fading old self-

I ruminate.

I think of times so good and smiling,

And then ones healing and rewarding.

Of ones fading and dreading me,

Of ones tearing my bloody heart-

Of ones of struggle and of ease.

After all these battered years I’ve lived.

I think, that-

I can call this deathbed a calmer haven.

So, through my tears,

I close my eyes,

And wait,

The eternal wait- of destiny.

The eternal wait,

Of destiny- the eternal wait:

Of destiny.

On this dearest deathbed of mine.
