Day and Night

By Sindhu Verma

Day and night:

Each owes its substance to the other.

Each gives way to the other.

The night creeps in each day

With a dark cloak

Throwing itself over the day.

The day emerges from within each night

With a spear of light

Ripping the night apart into shreds.

Day and night

Rock on a seesaw.

Some days are longer than nights.

Some nights are longer than days.

I watch their play with patience.

But I am not impartial.

I assiduously burn holes of light

Into that dark cloak of the night.

I leave the day alone untouched.
