Darkness

By Saumya Sinha

While standing in a petrifying darkness

You try not to make a sound

You try not to move, look or even think

Because in complete darkness you don’t know where anything is

And you are most scared to be found by the one thing you are escaping

So in fear you become non existent

A part of the nothingness

A part of the terror

Before you can realize it you become what you’ve been hiding from

And in you that darkness screams

Punishes you for trying to hide from it

Grows when you fight back

So you surrender, allowing the darkness to haunt you forever

But in return you ask for a small candle as a companion

So minuscule that it’s nothing compared to the darkness.

The darkness expands with your every thought and the light from that candle gets dimmer but forever staying with you

The light that reminds you that you are still alive

The light that dies with you.
