DARA SHIKOH: THE PERISHED ESTATE

I sought a different conquest. While my brother’s eyes were fixed entirely on the earthly geography of Hindustan, tracing borders with the sword, I was mapping an empire of the spirit. In my chambers, the verses of the Quran intertwined with the sacred hymns of the Upanishads. I believed, perhaps naively, that the truth of the Divine was a vast ocean, and all faiths were but rivers flowing into its depths. I called it the Majma-ul-Bahrain-the Mingling of the Two Oceans.

But oceans, I have learned too late, can drown a man.

Aurangzeb despised my ink as much as he despised my blood. To him, my tolerance was heresy; my poetry, a weakness. He did not just want to rule the empire; he wanted to cleanse it of my vision.

I remember the day they paraded me through the streets of Shahjahanabad-the very city my father built. The sun was scorching, a cruel witness to my humiliation. I was dressed in filthy rags, chained to the back of a frail, dirt-caked elephant. The crowds, my people, lined the streets. I looked down into their faces, searching for the love they once professed for the Crown Prince. Instead, I saw only terror, pity, and averted eyes. The swordsman who swore he would never be struck down was now a beggar in his own capital, a ghost haunting a living body.

My physical death was a mere formality; Aurangzeb had already murdered my spirit the day he turned my own gentleness against me. He ordered my execution not just to take the throne, but to ensure that my dream of a united, tolerant India died with me.

Yet, from the vantage point of eternity, I watch the centuries unfold. His reign of iron rusted from within. His endless wars bled the treasury dry, and his intolerance fractured the very foundation of the empire he killed so many to claim. The Red Fort, once a beacon of unparalleled majesty, now stands as an empty shell, haunted by the echoes of a dynasty that devoured itself. He won the battle, but history is a far more patient judge.
