COURAGE IS MORE THAN FEARLESSNESS

Good morning respected principal, my dear teachers and my dear friends. My name is Diveenaa Nair and as the head girl of this school, today, I would like to share on the title ‘Courage is more than fearlessness’.

Fearlessness can be defined as the trait of feeling no fear, and it can found as a audicious, brave, dauntless, hardy, intrepid, unfearing feeling in a person. Fearless individuals often embrace challenges and willingly step out of their comfort zones. Meanwhile, courage is a conscious choice or a deliberate decision that you make to move forward, and carry out what is morally right. Courage is an ability to make a choice and overcome what most fear. A brave man has fear but he overcomes fear by acting accordingly towards the truth. This does not only show your character but it also builds it alongway.

With courage in you, your inner strength, confidence and resilience is built and you will confront fear and overcome it for personal growth. Whereas, fearlessness may make you avoid the challenges of fear. Everyone can be courageous depending on the choice but if you are courageous, you will inspire others and instil the human spirit in them. Being courageous also makes you think things through and make the right decision. The coward listens to his fears and follows them but a courageous person puts his fear aside, goes ahead and acts because it is the right thing to do.

Courage is powerful because it makes you focus clearly and make correct judgement and assess threat. For instance, in the case of the Unabomber (Ted Kaczynski)a of the domestic terrorist and mathematician who mailed or hand delivered a series of increasingly sophisticated bombs that killed three Americans and injured nearly two dozen more was actually reported to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) by his own brother, David Richard Kaczynski. David Kaczynski, played a crucial role in solving the Unabomber case by contacting the FBI after recognizing his brother's writing style in the published manifesto, leading to Ted's arrest and the end of his bombing campaign. This is courage and it takes a lot of a person to act courageous as such by turning in his own brother.

Here are few quotations I really admire that are on courage. Winston Churchill, the British prime minister during World War 2 had said, ‘Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision’. JF. Kennedy said ‘ A man does what he must inspite of dangers that is the bases of all human morality’. I urge you to go read about these people. Another amazing person I read about is John McCainn, a naval officer and former United States Senator. While being held as a POW (prisoner of war) in North Vietnam, McCain was offered early release because his father was a high-ranking admiral. He refused the offer adhering to the military code of conduct that required prisoners to be released in the order they were captured. Due to this decision, he spent two years in solitary confinement, where he endured torture.

So let us remember, courage is not the absence of fear, without fear there can be no courage. By standing firm despite fear, courage becomes a strength built on honesty and resilience, proving that bravery is not about never being afraid, but about moving forward even when fear remains. If we can face our fears instead of running from them, then we are already courageous, and that is the kind of courage that truly matters. Thank you!
