Confusion
By Ayaan Vaswani
Where am I?
What is this place?
Why is there nothing but darkness
Crushing me?
Why can I not see them
In my head?
Those who I love?
The boy with the books he loves?
The girl with her canvas and brushes?
The woman with eyes like sparkling jewels?
‘What people?’
It says.
I don’t know.
The answers are gone now.
The questions are too.
GETOUTOFMYHEADGETOUTOFMYHEAD
My eyes open.
I know who I am.
I look up from my metal-framed bed.
They are here.
Ashen-faced.
My son, with the books he loves.
My daughter, with her canvas and brushes.
My wife, her eyes like sparkling jewels.
My mouth opens.
I see the tears in their eyes.
But the darkness returns.
Where am I?
Those people
Who were they?
‘What people?’
It says.
