Confession
By Jahnavi Amara
Deep in my bones
A voice echoes
A million little clones
Of the same love we’ve made
Deep in my veins
A sound ripples
The rust on the chains
That your hands have broken
Eyes blurred with illusions of the past
And the hopes of the future
My heart is a little pendant
Mother found it while gardening
Father cleaned it with his other tools
Brother put it around my neck
But you are the family I’ve chosen
To keep inside this little pendant
Deep down earth’s crust
Shivers a core
From the chills of trust
And the bridges we’ve built
Deep down in my grave
Watch my body still ache
Shackled, still a slave
For the promise of tomorrow
Eyes blurred with illusions of the past
And the hopes of the future
My heart is a little pendant
Mother found it while gardening
Father cleaned it with his other tools
Brother put it around my neck
But you are the family I’ve chosen
To keep inside this little pendant
Bury me six feet under
But bury me upside down
Maybe at least then
My heart will be in the right place.
